London Olympics Group Performance Design

For this this project I had to design a costume suitable for a London Olympics opening ceremony group performance. The brief was to create a unisex costume that had a graphic style and changed in view. For This design instead of trying to come up with a complex way of changing the costume in sight, I decided to experiment with stage lighting. I experimented with how changing the natural lighting colour effects the light absorbed in the pigments. You can see how changing the stage lighting effects the colours of the costume in the video above. By doing this it adds another dynamic to the costume without the dancers having to fiddle with a costume change.

The costume is a simple white unisex leotard, with a floor length skirt, made up of alternating blue and red tightly pleated panels. When the the skirt sits naturally very little red is seen, however once the leg is lifted the red bands are exposed. The skirt has a large elasticated waist that is stretchy enough to easily and quickly be lifted from the waist to shoulder mid performance as seen in the above photo, again this helps to add another dynamic to the dance performance
